Go Offline – No Digital Media Until Age 4

Digital media are everywhere—even in our children’s early years. But especially during this sensitive phase, children need, above all, closeness, play, language, and relationships with real people. Our community initiative raises awareness among parents and caregivers about the mindful use of digital devices and shows how children can experience more and thrive without electronic media.

Why no digital media until age 4?

Children under the age of four learn through all their senses—for example, by playing, touching, looking, listening, and speaking. Media consumption hinders their social, intellectual, physical, and language development. What children need instead are deep relationships with real people.

What can I do as a parent?

Even small changes can make a difference: Be fully present. Read aloud instead of streaming. Eat and talk together. Play outside. Set media rules and create offline moments in your daily routine. From practical everyday tips to expert information: On our website, you’ll find ideas for fun leisure activities with young children, as well as tips on adjusting settings on smartphones and tablets to promote mindful use of digital media in your family’s daily life.

Who is behind Go Offline?

Several schools and municipalities in Zurich have developed this project in collaboration with experts in early childhood education, care, and upbringing (FBBE). The initiative is based on the latest research on early childhood development and has a simple goal: to help parents make informed decisions about their children’s use of digital media during the early years of life.
